![]() This phenomenon can be caused by many different factors. In a nutshell and quite plainly the term “Red Tide” was coined because of the discoloration seen in the water due to the immense numbers of toxic algae concentrations. So how did the term come to be in regards to the ocean? But isn’t algae normally green? Whenever I have seen fish tanks that haven’t been cleaned the best they usually have green algae building up, when I visit lakes the algae I see is green. We know what causes Red Tide, now why is it called “Red”? Red Tides are amazingly eerie to look at but they indicate an unwell ecosystem. ![]() Put simply this is an overgrowth of harmful algae that is immensely damaging to multiple ecosystems and many economies that rely on those ecosystems.įlorida’s Red Tide/ Flickr Why is it called Red Tide? This present deadly Red Tide, which is in some areas as thick as six feet deep at the water’s edge, has reportedly killed Goliath grouper, tarpon rays, and even dolphins and other marine mammals. Huge amounts of dead fish, and we’re not just talking about the little bait fish or a shrimp or two, are the result of the current outburst of Red Tide in canals and beaches on Florida’s gulf coast in and around St. Brevis are wreaking havoc on many Florida beaches. While all algae aren’t necessarily dangerous the immense numbers of K. Karenia Brevis produces a neurotoxin that can kill fish and marine mammals and it depletes the water’s oxygen level, causing a mass die-off. It is a naturally occurring phytoplankton/algae but it’s quite dangerous. The most common or well-known harmful algae bloom in the Gulf of Mexico is called Karenia Brevis. There are multiple, over 50 to be somewhat exact, species of algae in the Gulf of Mexico alone. The cause of this troubling occurrence is known as harmful algae blooms or more commonly known as Red Tide and it’s bad news for everyone and everything involved. Have you visited a Florida beach recently? Well, if you have you may have noticed a discoloration in the water, maybe an abnormal amount of algae washed ashore.Įven more shocking, you may have noticed an increase in the amount of dead fish and other aquatic life washed ashore. Below are some common questions relating to Red Tide in Florida. Red Tides or Red Tide Blooms also known by scientists as Harmful Algae Blooms are events that happen along many coasts all over the world. Red Tides happen when a particular algae grows out of control. But when you take a deeper look there is so much more to it than just some discolored water and some dead fish washed ashore. Sounds like a hoot doesn’t it? If you’re like me you’ve heard of Red Tide, you may have even been affected by it. Looking for information about Florida’s Red Tide?

And it’s a win for the state’s private landowners, who have long complained to the DWR about elk herds damaging their livestock and agricultural operations. So while it may seem counterintuitive, the science shows those private-land tags help public-land hunters who have historically lamented the lack of elk on public lands during hunting season. ![]() As a result of the study, the Utah DWR has now permanently implemented private-land permits for elk. Taken together, these numbers show how private-land permits have allowed the state’s hunters and landowners to better co-manage its elk populations-while at the same time making more elk available to hunters on public land. Read Next: If Chronic Wasting Disease Is Fatal, Why Aren’t We Finding CWD-Killed Deer in the Woods? That number increased to 41 percent in 2016 and 42 percent in 2017. In 2015, the team’s GPS data showed collared elk at just 29 percent of public land locations. The timing of the study was also important because Utah began issuing private-land elk permits in 2016, and researchers noticed a marked difference in the distribution of elk over the years, which they attributed directly to the issuance of these permits. “It’s almost like they’re thinking, ‘Oh, all these trucks are coming, it’s opening day, better move.’” “It’s crazy on the opening day of the hunt, they move, and the closing day they move back” Brock McMillan, a BYU professor and one the study’s senior authors, said in a news release. And every year, like clockwork, the collared elk would shift back to public land at the conclusion of hunting season The team then tracked these animals over the next three years and detected noticeable shifts in elk distribution from public lands to tracts of private land during archery and rifle seasons. Between January of that year and March 2017, researchers and students with BYU helped the DWR capture and collar 445 male and female elk along the Wasatch Front in central Utah. With funding from the Utah Division of Wildlife Resources, Sportsmen for Fish and Wildlife, and the Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation, the research project began in 2015. But even more importantly, the study found that increasing hunting pressure on private land significantly reduces this “refuge effect” and effectively pushes elk back onto public land. ![]() “Elk respond to changes in human activities, and are adept at seeking refuge from hunting pressure,” the study points out. Conducted by Brigham Young University and published last month in the Journal of Wildlife Management, the study found that elk in central Utah reduced their use of public lands by over 30 percent by the middle of rifle season. Kari Cieszkiewicz / USFWSĪ new study from Utah shows that the state’s elk are feeling the pressure from hunters and responding accordingly. According to the recent study, elk in Utah have gotten pretty good at avoiding hunters on public lands and finding refuge on private lands during hunting season. |
